Hacking School Libraries - April 2019

@anniep156 if at first you don’t succeed, try again next financial year! I found ideas that were rejected one year might well be taken up another time. I used to discuss them with the Head, get rejected, then put the idea in my development plan with a suggested group of children to work with. This sometimes worked, particularly if the Head understood the potential benefit.

@Elizabeth I agree that it’s about relationshipS and your status in school. It’s particularly hard to embed new ideas if they are slightly off the wall. They need to be seen to fill a gap in curriculum or special needs provision. It helped in my schools to offer initiatives to reluctant readers, Pupil Premium children (some budget might be included) or gifted and talented.

@Elizabeth I used to do most of these things in my libraries, apart from working with overseas librarians. I was very part-time, so had to let some initiatives pass me by. However, some of my schools had partnerships with schools in Africa and Bangladesh via the British Council and were I still working there I would have tried to develop some form of contact. It’s refreshing. to read about other librarians’ ideas and to pickup some useful tips.
