January 2023 - Will 2023 be the year of artificial intelligence? What are the implications for teacher librarians?

Social media is awash with ChatGPT and AI and is certainly something that school librarians should have a little knowledge of.

This month's discussion is going to focus on a blog post written by Dr Kay Oddone is not only full of great resources (ok she does include one of mine so I am a little biased 😊) she also poses a great question about the implication for teacher librarians in this new AI world.

I have to say I feel a whole new world is opening up for Librarians with this technology. I really feels asthough, if we play it right, this could be our time to shine. Articles like this demonstrate why and we need to continue to collaborate to help each other demonstrate why our position is unique in schools and allows us to support teachers and SLTs to embrace this new form of IT.

I am fortunate to be the individual chosen in our school, to attend a training session about this. I am taking this as an invitation to the table - other members of staff are equally keen and would have been good candidates for the investment so I'm grabbing it and in the mean time will be reading and watching all I can. I attended a free seminar this afternoon given by IAPS (https://iaps.uk/professional-development/ems-event-calendar/chat-gpt-and-ai-in-education-what-is-it-and-what-does-it-mean-for-your-students-and-staff.html) and will work my way through more over the coming weeks.

I agree @Ruth Maloney it is certainly an opportunity. I am glad that you have been chosen to go... It will certainly raise your profile and add to your ability to work across the curriculum. I am hoping that our next podcast about ChatGPT will highlight the role of the school librarian more!

I think that ChatGPT is a good opportunity for us as teacher librarians/librarians to collaborate and learn about the impact together with our colleagues. By having a seat at the table when it comes to sharing our expertise in information literacy and media literacy. So much of it can be applied here.

I agree @Erin Patel I believe it is hugely important that school librarians learn and understand all they can about AI and ChatGPT. Being able to discuss it with knowledge and understanding will help raises their profile within their school. Being aware of new technologies have always been part of the role and this as no different. You are absolutely right that this is just an extension of our media and information literacy skills knowledge and expertise.

From what I have read, AI isn't a fad that will pass and that it would be to our detriment to refuse to adapt and change to ensure that we continue to support our schools and the students. That said, the continued focus on building skills that support critical thinking, reading, research and use of information applies to AI as much as it does to a basic Google search. We can teach students to be "fact checkers", to question where information comes from, to build knowledge so that they don't rely on incorrect information, to cite (which ChatGPT can't do - yet). Learning how this tool is adapting, how our students are using it, and how this affects our role is essential.

I love this reply @Erin Patel you truly encapsulate all the a librarian can bring. Our knowledge about AI and ChatGPT is essential... We can't bury our head in the sand we need to learn and move forward and if possible try and be one step ahead of our students.
